How Diverse Are We?

This is a collection of the videos that are posted in the weekly updates. Added on one page with their explanations to make access easier. There will be a wide range of types of diversity in the videos from the clear religious forms to generations differences to medical explanations to introductions to choice diversity but not everything can be covered. The idea behind the videos just to give an idea of what can make people different, or what can make them the same depending on your perspective.

Are Fandoms Good or Unhealthy Obsessions?
Why?
Brit Garner discusses the psychological side of fandom. Questioning the healthiness of it, she does provide a definition of a and doesn’t limit to a specific type of fan. It is a useful video for the effects of fandom on a person.

Dungeons & Dragons: A Spot of Bother (Ep. 1 of 3)

Why?
From the choice diversity series. Because we don't all want to spend our free time the same way (it would be boring if we did) I wanted to look at ways library could be used, groups that could use it that may not traditionally use the space.
With D&D having a focus on storytelling, make-believe and world building. It suits the libraries interest in fair play, creativity, imagination and fun, I really can’t think of a place this sort of gaming is more at home than a library. While dressing up is an option it isn’t mandatory, libraries often have the space to run this sort of event and if the library was to advertise for a DM they may get a volunteer it doesn’t need to be a staff member (not to say it couldn’t be). Just something for libraries to keep in mind next time they are planning community events may be a local D&D group would like to showcase a game. And the OxBoxtra because Johnny is a brilliant DM who tolerates who much from is wayward newbie charges.

BigBang - Fantastic Baby

Why?
From the choice diversity series. Because we don't all want to spend our free time the same way (it would be boring if we did) I wanted to look at ways library could be used, groups that could use it that may not traditionally use the space.

For the best explanation of why Fantastic Baby is here look at the source post for it. Essentially K-pop fans can use the space, all music fans can as a meeting space but K-pop fans also as a rehearsal space. Fantastic Baby is used just as an example of K-pop it is so loud, so mad, so classic and so quintessentially K-pop. BigBang are an older K-pop group these days, but their popularity remains.

Fitting In (Hogwarts Houses!)

Why?
Thomas Sanders created this video about fitting in/ standing out and risk using the Hogwarts Houses as a device, wandering into other fandoms along the way. It sounds more complicated than it is. What does need to be explained is Thomas Sanders has a whole series of these videos where he talks to sides of himself, Virgil (his anxiety), Logan (his logical thinking), Patton (his morality) and Roman (his creativity). There is another side in later episodes known a Deceit for now, he’ll get a name later. This is just one-way fandoms can be used, just one example of a fan using his fan-ness to explain.

Generations Throughout History

Why?
Generations Throughout History (BuzzFeedVideo, 2017) briefly tells the evolution of the 7 living generations what influenced them and their perspectives. It is from an American viewpoint but realistically that doesn’t make it less relevant to Australia or the rest of the western world. America was directly impacted by the incidents mentioned early on with everyone else only feeling shock waves but for later generations with the rise of technology the world changed the way people felt incident changed. It is useful to remember that all generations are different, impacted by different events and it can be a reminder that people are the same, we are all influenced by the events that shape our lives.

Guess My Disability

Why?
Cut has a series challenging the preconceptions of people about others. In the episode Guess my Disability three people are asked to do just that guess the disabilities of the people they are talking to. The disabilities come from all four loose types of disabilities sensory, physical, intellectual and mental illness. These range from the obvious physical one is in a wheelchair caused by Spina bifida, one has PTSD, one Tourette’s. It is a wonderful clip for the humanity.

Human Sexuality is Complicated...

Why?
Diversity 101 for the 21st century is gender and sexuality differences. They are subtler than the physical and more complicated. So much more complicated. Libraries can be a safe place for gender and sexual diverse youth, the least library staff can do is be aware of some of the different types of gender and sexual diversity. Enter Hank Green to talk about the differences and more importantly the spectrum in the simplest way possible all at his usual breakneck but still understandable speed (vlogbrothers, 2012). If you want more information there are many websites, many videos, many books aimed at different levels academically and understanding wise. As library staff you meet and interact with people of all kinds some looking for information regarding sensitive topics, their privacy is our concern.

Libraries may be the answer to what divides us
Why?
I didn’t want to put in a video about homelessness in libraries, the most visible sign most of us will see of the low socioeconomic groups in our libraries, I wanted one that showed something of a spectrum of the positive impact that can be had by libraries. Jason Kacsma’s does that. Key to this talk is the concept of access for all. If we as library staff live by that maybe the world can be a better place.

Me & Mass Shootings

Why?
This was published in 2016 after what was then the deadliest mass shooting in US history (it has since been succeeded by a shooting in Las Vegas, "Mass shootings in the United States," n.d.). Eugene Lang discusses the personal impact mass shootings have had on him. This is American but the prevalence of technology for Millennials and Gen Z mean that what impacts one impacts us all, we all feel each other’s pain. Or as Eugene Lang buts it “our interconnectedness not only as a nation but also as a global community; the internet, social media and bullet holes are like the connected dots that make our generation beyond each others shores.”

Religion: Crash course sociology #39

Why?
Nicole Sweeney presents a series on topics from a sociological perspective for YouTube channel CrashCourse. Her presentation attempts to remove the passion and God from the situation and look at religion’s role in society. CrashCourse (like vlogbrothers) is aimed at a younger audience so it can be useful for a simpler perspective while still being educational and engaging. No single religion is singled out, it is about how they influence society, their impact on equality and what is a religion (with helpful definitions).

Things Not to Say to Someone With Epilepsy

Why?
BBC Three has a series called Things Not to Say to…(BBC Three, 2015-2018) one of the videos is Things Not to Say to Someone With Epilepsy (BBC Three, 2017), it is the most accurate videos on the human side of epilepsy, clearing a lot of the misconceptions associated with living with what is a largely hidden condition. Namely, it’s not all dangerous flashing lights and seizures on the ground, it is different for all of us we all have different triggers and show different symptoms.

Thinking About Cultural Diversity

Why?
Australia is both a multicultural and culturally diverse society with some 30.2% of Australians born in a country other than Australia, only 50% of Australians having both parents born in Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2018).  While the video is aimed at a school setting it is relevant to the community as a whole. If a library was going to run a diversity display there are a lot of phrases in this video that could easily be woven in. It provides a nice non-judgemental and positive overview of cultural diversity.
